Big Bend Update: What's Changed Since Our Last Post

A few weeks back we broke down the border construction happening near Santa Elena Canyon and what it meant for your trip. Things move fast out here, so here's where it all stands now — straight from the park's own alerts page, updated as of today.

The Big Headline: Construction Is Paused
On August 16, CBP's own commissioner, Rodney Scott, ordered a stop to construction inside the park while he comes down to talk to local sheriffs and stakeholders. He met with Brewster and Terrell County sheriffs on August 18 and committed to keeping work stopped for at least two weeks. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also said DHS's secretary personally told him no barrier construction would happen inside the park.
Worth being straight with you: this is a pause, not a cancellation. Officials have said the project itself hasn't been called off, and a federal court also issued a temporary restraining order that's keeping construction halted until a hearing on August 28 in San Antonio. We'll keep watching this and update you as it develops, but for now, the bulldozers have gone quiet.
As of today, that pause has real, visible results: video shared August 19 by Billy Bartko, co-owner of Far Flung Outdoor Center, shows heavy machinery actively moving out of the Solis area of the park, near a road that provides access to the Rio Grande. CBP has also said it does not currently plan to build the 30-foot steel bollard wall inside the park itself. Neither of those means the broader project is over, though — the agency says planning and assessment are continuing, and construction elsewhere in the greater Big Bend region (outside the park boundaries) is still moving forward.
A Lawsuit Out of San Antonio
That temporary restraining order came from a lawsuit filed August 14 in federal court in San Antonio: People of La Junta for Preservation v. DHS. The suit argues the construction threatens La Junta de los Rios, an archaeological and sacred site tied to Indigenous history in this stretch of the Big Bend region, and that building through it violates religious freedom protections. It was brought alongside Far Flung Outdoor Center and two Indigenous religious practitioners. A hearing is set for August 28 in San Antonio.
What's Actually Closed Right Now
Straight from the NPS Big Bend alerts page (last updated August 17):
Construction-related:
Old Maverick Road — closed to all vehicle traffic since August 12, until construction "poses no more danger to the public." No return date yet.
Santa Elena Boat Launch area — the eastern edge of the parking lot down through the clearing zone, plus the riverbank below the fog line, are closed to the public.
Flood-related (nothing to do with the border project):
Old Ore Road — closed until further notice from past flash flood damage
Black Gap Road — closed for the same reason, including the drive-in campsites along it

What's Still Open and Running
Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive (paved) — still your way into Santa Elena Canyon
Chisos Basin and Panther Junction — open, normal hours
Boquillas Port of Entry — open Friday through Monday, 9am–4pm, valid passport required
The Santa Elena Canyon hiking trail itself isn't on the closed list
Good to Know Before You Roll In
Restaurant: closed, but the food truck outside the Lodge is running 7am–3pm (closed 10–11am)
Persimmon Gap, Rio Grande Village, and Castolon Visitor Centers are closed for the summer — Panther Junction and Chisos Basin are your go-tos
Cottonwood Campground is closed for the summer, reopening November 1

What This Means for Your Trip
Ross Maxwell is still your road into the canyon, so a Santa Elena day trip is very much on. If a river float or canyon paddle is part of your plans, the boat launch access has changed — check with an outfitter before you lock anything in. And if you were eyeing the backcountry dirt roads on the east side of the park, Old Ore and Black Gap are out for now regardless of what's happening with the border project.
None of this touches your stay with us. We're three miles from the park's west entrance, and the roads getting you here are unaffected. Come as you are — we'll help you sort out the best route for whatever you've got planned.
