Book Direct for Big Bend: Skip the Hidden Markup

Airbnb quietly changed how it charges for every booking out there, and the whole point of the change is that you're not supposed to notice. Book direct with us instead, and you can skip it entirely, $50 a night back in your pocket for the exact same stay.

Here's the short version. Airbnb used to split its cut two ways, hosts paid 3%, guests paid a separate service fee of 14 to 16% right there at checkout. That's gone now. Airbnb takes 15.5% straight from the host's side instead, so guests don't see a line item anymore, and it looks like a win. Except most hosts still want the same payout, so they raise the nightly rate to cover it. The fee didn't go anywhere. It just crawled inside the price tag where you can't see it.

Book the Modern House direct and you're at $269 to $279 a night. Book the same house on Airbnb and that markup pushes it to $317 to $329. Same view of the Chisos, same porch, $48 to $50 a night difference for booking the way that actually reaches us.

The BoHo Yurt runs the same math. Direct, it's $239 a night Sunday through Wednesday, $249 Thursday through Saturday. Same yurt on Airbnb, same nights, and you're paying $282 to $294. Full bathroom, kitchenette, same dark sky waiting outside your door either way, just a $43 to $45 gap depending on how you book it.


Camping never had this problem to begin with. Paisano Azul Ranch Campgrounds has never touched Airbnb, and as of August 2026 we're off Hipcamp too. All nine private sites, fire pit and BBQ pit and picnic table on every one of them, book direct only, through our own site and Cloudbeds. Nothing to strip out because we never added it.


One thing that doesn't change no matter how you book: every stay here, house, yurt, or campsite, runs a two-night minimum. Airbnb has the same rule on our listings. So the only real decision left is whether that money goes to a markup or stays with you.

Same fire pit crackling at night. Same 3 miles to the gate. Same nine named sites and the same host who actually texts you back. Book direct and the only thing that changes is what you're not paying for.

Is it cheaper to book Paisano Azul Ranch directly instead of through Airbnb? Yes. Direct rates run $269-$279 a night for the Modern House and $239-$249 for the BoHo Yurt. The same stays on Airbnb run $317-$329 and $282-$294, the markup that covers Airbnb's 15.5% host fee. That's $43-$50 a night back in your pocket.


Can I book the Paisano Azul Ranch campgrounds on Airbnb or Hipcamp? No. The campgrounds have never been on Airbnb, and as of August 2026 they're no longer on Hipcamp either. Direct booking through paisanoazulranch.com is the only way to reserve a campsite.


Did Airbnb raise prices for guests in 2026? Not as a visible fee. Airbnb shifted its 15.5% service fee entirely to hosts, and most hosts have raised their nightly rates to absorb it, so guests are still paying, just without a separate line item at checkout.


Is there a one-night stay option at Paisano Azul Ranch? No. Every stay, the Modern House, the BoHo Yurt has a two-night minimum, whether you book direct or through Airbnb. The campsites can be booked for a single night.
