We are excited to hear that the park officials have announced the Chisos Basin will remain open during the Winter Season of 2025! This decision is a wonderful surprise for many visitors and nature enthusiasts who cherish the breathtaking beauty and unique experiences that the Chisos Basin has to offer during the winter months. The cooler temperatures and serene landscapes create a magical atmosphere that is perfect for exploration and relaxation.
Furthermore, it is fantastic news that the restaurant, lodging, visitor center, camping facilities, and various trails will remain open throughout this season. This means that visitors can enjoy a full range of amenities and services, making their experience in the park more comfortable and enjoyable. The availability of lodging allows guests to stay overnight and immerse themselves in the stunning surroundings, while the restaurant offers a chance to savor delicious meals after a day of hiking or exploring. The visitor center will continue to provide valuable information and resources, helping guests to plan their adventures effectively.

How exciting it is to be able to still hike the renowned Lost Mine Trail and the picturesque Window Trail for one more season! These trails are not only popular for their stunning views and challenging terrain but also for the opportunity they provide to connect with nature on a deeper level. The Lost Mine Trail, with its sweeping vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys, is a favorite among hikers seeking both beauty and adventure. Meanwhile, the Window Trail offers a unique perspective of the park, leading to a dramatic overlook that frames the desert landscape below, especially enchanting during sunset.

As we had mentioned in the earlier post Exploring the Impacts of Construction Closures in Big Bend National Park's Chisos Basin, there was an initial plan for the basin to close in August 2025 to facilitate necessary improvements, which included rebuilding the mountain lodge, renovating the restaurant, and replacing the aging water distribution system. During that anticipated closure, several critical areas such as Basin Road, lodging units, Basin Campground, the restaurant, the National Park Service visitor center, the camper store, and surrounding trail access were all scheduled to be closed to the public. The basin is now set to close starting on May 1, 2026. Here is a link to check out the updates www.nps.gov. However, the rest of the park was to remain open, allowing visitors to continue enjoying the vast and diverse landscapes that Big Bend National Park is known for.

This extension of the Chisos Basin's operational season not only allows visitors to make the most of their time in this stunning environment but also gives the park officials more time to ensure that the upcoming renovations will enhance the visitor experience in the long run. We look forward to seeing how these improvements will further enrich the natural beauty and accessibility of this incredible destination for years to come.
