Is Big Bend Still Open? Here's the September Update

Short answer: yes. The border construction pause at Big Bend National Park has been extended, and as of this week it's set to run through September 30, 2026. If you've been holding off on booking a trip because of headlines about bulldozers and border barriers, here's the direct, sourced update on where things actually stand.

What's Changed Since Our Last Post

Our August 20 update reported a pause that CBP said would last "at least two weeks." That pause has now been formally extended. Following an August 28 federal court hearing, the Department of Homeland Security told the court that no earth or dirt would be moved on the project until September 30, 2026. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez confirmed the extension publicly on August 31.

Both sides in the ongoing litigation had to file additional paperwork with the court by September 7. What happens after September 30 is genuinely unclear, multiple outlets covering this story describe it as an open question, and we'll update again once there's a real answer.


What's Actually Closed Right Now

Per the park's official Alerts & Conditions page (last updated September 13, 2026):

– A portion of the Santa Elena Boat Launch area remains closed to public access, specifically the eastern edge of the parking lot and the riverbank down to the high-water mark. This closure has been in effect since August 12 and has not been lifted, even during the construction pause.

– Old Maverick Road is no longer listed among current closures. It was closed starting August 12; it does not appear on the park's current alerts page, which is the best available sign it has reopened. If that scenic gravel route is part of your plans, we'd still suggest a quick call to the park (432-477-2251) to confirm before you go, conditions here have moved fast all summer.

– Two closures remain in effect but are unrelated to the border project: Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road, both closed due to past flash flood damage. A third, Cottonwood to Santa Elena Canyon Road, is also closed for flood-related reasons.


What's Open

– Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to Santa Elena Canyon is open.

– The Santa Elena Canyon hiking trail itself is not closed. Hikers should be ready to cross Terlingua Creek, which can be dry sand, mud, or flowing depending on recent rain, normal seasonal caution, not construction-related.

– Chisos Basin and Panther Junction visitor centers are open on normal hours.

– Boquillas Crossing continues to operate on its regular Friday-Monday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. schedule with a valid passport.

– The park's main restaurant is closed for now, but the food truck is running daily, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed 10-11 a.m.).

What This Means If You're Planning a Trip

Big Bend is open, and the overwhelming majority of the park, including the drive to Santa Elena Canyon and the trail itself, is unaffected. The one real construction-related restriction that remains is the section of river frontage near the Santa Elena Boat Launch, so if a canyon float or put-in there is part of your plans, confirm current access with an outfitter or the park directly before you book.

We're three miles from the park's western gate, and from here, a Santa Elena day trip is very much on the table.
